We’re getting down to the deadline, as expected, to sign the Royals’ first-round pick, first baseman Eric Hosmer. Deadline by MLB rules is 10 p.m. tonight, and if the third overall pick doesn’t sign, he’ll have to use his full-ride scholarship to Arizona State.
The Orioles signed the fourth overall pick, left-handed pitcher Rian Matusz, at 12:30 p.m. today for a $3.2 million bonus and $3.4 million guaranteed. His signing gives agent Scott Boras and the Royals a negotiationpoint. And with the signing of fourth-round pick Tim Melville, the Royals can focus all their attention on Hosmer.
The Kansas City Star’s Sam Mellinger has a great post putting today’s negotiations into perspective as he’s been following it all summer. I won’t repeat his work here and instead send you to his post.
Check back here later tonight for updates on his signing, or his refusal to sign.
